On December 6, 1917 [probably] the largest man made  non-nuclear
explosion took place in Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada.

It sank ships, destroyed much of the city, blinded many, and killed 2000.

The explosive materials consisted:
10 tons of gun cotton
35 tons of benzol
200 tons of TNT,
2,300 tons of wet and dry picric acid (high explosive)
